About Us

A fish! And some guy named Steve

In 1985 Steve and Henri (Henrietta) Reed purchased the Sports Cave Ltd and on the 1st of June the Sports Cave (1985) Limited came into being. With Steve’s passion for fishing the then general sporting goods store became known for its strong fishing section and during the 1990’s became one of Wellington’s specialist fishing tackle stores, where it became universally known as Steve’s Fishing Shop.

Steve has had forty years experience in the sports trade in Wellington and is totally focused on serving the sports fishing community in both supplying good quality tackle, and in advice and service. Steve also has had six years experience as a Wellington based charter fishing skipper and has an extensive knowledge of Wellington’s local waters.

Steve is able to service most brands of reels, repair fishing rods, tie specialized fishing rigs, rig game lures, and is always happy to share his knowledge and experience with anglers both new to the sport and those with more experience. As a regular fishing reporter on the Geoff Thomas Hunting and Fishing Show Radio Show, Steve has been sharing the Wellington region fishing reports with the rest of New Zealand for more than twenty years.

Steve is a keen supporter and encourager of kids fishing, and Steve’s Fishing Shop is a staunch supporter of the local boating and angling clubs. Steve has been a member of the Wellington Surfcasting and Angling Club for more than thirty years

Steve has extensive fishing experience both from the shore and the boat, and has been a successful competitive competition angler both locally and at National level from both the shore and the boat. Steve is a past NZACA National Boat Section Champion and has had numerous successes both from the shore section and the boat section of the Wellington Surfcasting And Angling Club. He has fished extensivly around New Zealand including the Three Kings and White Island gamefishing, Greymouth for blue fin tuna and many of New Zealands beautiful rivers for trout.
